[After the rather disastrous end to his "battle" in the chess match, Luke is having a grand old time hacking and slashing away at the trunk of a tree in some secluded area with his knife. After a while he gets irritated with ...something; the tree, himself, the knife, who knows? Either way he cries out in general frustration and throws the knife aside and stalks a few feet from it, clicking his lighter with his hands cupped around his face. After a few clicks, he pulls the lighter away and exhales a mouthful of smoke, cigarette in his hand.] Tch.

I figured... It's really an earth thing, from what I can tell. At least, all the people I've seen using them are from there.

Yeah. They were a gift from a girl in a convenience store in Los Angeles. [Frowns at the pack of them absently.]

...You're endangering your life over a gift?

It-- no. When I say "gift", I mean the girl couldn't understand me and I couldn't read anything unless I touched it and I didn't have any American currency and she was kind of freaked out, but I was having a minor meltdown in her store so she gave me something to help. Cigarettes are notorious for chilling a person out.

...honestly weed does it better but it's also a lot more expensive. [I should just start calling him Substance Abuse Luke. It's a new reject Barbie Doll. 8|]

[Purses his lips and moves the cigarette away for a moment, cracking up laughing.]

...Sorry, sorry. I'm not laughing at you, I'm laughing at myself. Weed is a street term for marijuana or cannabis; it's a plant that can be used as a psychoactive drug. It tends to mellow people out and make them crave potato chips. ...or cheetos.

Why is it expensive...? It doesn't really sound like it should be.

Because it's illegal so people jack up the prices on the black market.

...I didn't think something that made you eat potato chips could be illegal.

[Brb cracking up all over again.] It's a drug, and it makes people kind of dumb. "May impede your ability to operate machinery", and the like.

...I still don't get it, but okay. Being dumb is probably better than killing yourself slowly, though.

[Shrugs lightly.]

How could you read things by touching them?

[Blinks.] ...Oh! See, I was in this City and we had this neat sort of ...translation device implanted in us, but it only worked if we were touching things. Everything was in English if I was just looking at it but it all switched to Fonic if I touched it. Kind of handy, really. Here, everybody just seems to know everything by default. [Goes back to smoking his cigarette, btw.]

...That's really weird. Convenient, though, I guess... It actually took me a while to figure out English stuff, it used to confuse me a lot.

You've had the pleasure of knowing Earth, then? [Note the sarcasm.]

I've never actually been or anything, but I know a lot about it. Luke's dad is from there.

Huh. Confusing lineage, between Earth and Auldrant and here.

I guess it is all a bit weird. I've just gotten used to it by this point.

That's about all you can do, after a certain point.

I guess so. Otherwise we'd all have gone completely insane.

[Chuckles.] A lot of us have. [Takes a drag of that cigarette and puts it out.]

I'd like to at least think that I haven't. Hopefully I'm not just deluding myself.

[Grins wryly.] It's hard to tell, sometimes.
