It appears that in this location, whatever it may be... many of us- us being all of the players involved in the events involved in the making of a replica world- are brought here. From many universes, each of them with a different set of events that are drastically different- and yet in concept identical.

He died when he transferred his power to Mysterica due to her illness from manipulating the Sephiroth. He was going to die anyway, but due to her position he sacrificed himself to save her.
