... even before it changed, I was new here. I have little knowledge of what's here. However, given there is no stench of unwashed bodies, I assume at least there are baths near the rooms.

Look down. We're on carpet. It dries slowly, and eventually smells. What we are looking for is something such as wood or tile. Something that won't absorb water like carpet.
