Alive and kicking, I see

[You get no warning and no chance to prepare.

Nephry didn't get those things either, when her home was attacked!

Now she's there near the front of a building, staggering a little ways until she sinks to her knees. For a while she'll try to keep herself upright with her arm. If no one finds her fast enough, she'll fail at that, too.]

[Nephry nods slowly, using the couch to brace herself while she stands. ...She has no nightclothes to speak of, but right now it doesn't matter that much.

She does stop when she reaches the stairs.]

I'm glad you were here, Jade.

[and then slowly ascends them.]

[Jade stares at her, bemused. Fortunately, he's spared the trouble of needing to come up with a reply. He watches without comment as she disappears from view. After awhile, he'll get up from the couch to search through the house, seeing if there's anything he needs to buy.]

[He'll check on Nephry once before going to bed himself.]

[He wakes up early next morning and quickly prepares some food before heading upstairs to check on Nephry again, frowning at her wounds. If you're still asleep, he'll reach out to give you a gentle shake on the shoulder.]

[Both times he checks on her, he'll find a sound-asleep governor. In the morning, though, that shake gets a definite reaction. Nephry opens her eyes and half-sits quickly, looking around the room]

Did something happen?

Calm down. Everything is fine. [Jade keeps his voice calm and soothing, as if he's talking to a skittish lab animal. Although that might not be the best comparison.]

[Did he really talk that way to the animals and monsters he experimented on? If Nephry knew that she would probably be afraid, right now. A gentle Jade is still unnerving on some level.

But for the most part? It does calm her down, and when her rational mind catches up, she holds her head in her hand for a moment.]

My apologies, Jade. I suppose I overslept?

It's perfectly fine. You needed the rest. How are you feeling today?

Better. ...I still have a headache, but...things seem much clearer this morning.

Good. [He leans closer to inspect the bandages.] Shall I bring breakfast up for you?

[they look good. No signs of trouble. The thought of food still doesn't sit well with her.]

If it's something small. And not heavy. ...I can always join you downstairs.

I'd prefer that you don't exert yourself unnecessarily. [He is not being overprotective. He's not. Really.] Do pancakes sound fine?

[They sound heavy. But what can she do?]

Just one, perhaps.

[[ooc: This is my best guess at what that was supposed to say!]]

[He nods and turns to leave. After a minute or two, he'll be back with a pancake and a steaming mug of tea.]

[[ooc: I have distinct and conscious memories of answering. ...I just had no idea I'd typod like that.]]

Thank you. ["You really don't need to go to all this trouble" isn't something Jade will appreciate or respond to. So, she doesn't say it. It's better to just eat, slowly, and savor that tea.]

It's no problem. [He's brought up a cup of tea for himself and sips at it as he waits for Nephry to finish, savouring the quiet.]

[The quiet is lovely. Peaceful, and calm...and spent with her brother. The man she has seen more of in the past year than she had in the previous seven. ...The man who seems to have changed a great deal, once and for all. It's enough to make her smile as she finishes her tea and leans back against the head of the bed.]

[He's smiling too, amused.] For someone injured, you certainly seem happy.

Make no mistake, I'm worried about what's happening in Keterburg in my absence.

...But I could well have been injured and alone, instead.

With luck, your absence won't be noticed. Time works in strange ways.

[Going to avoid that other part for now. Saying something touching and sentimental is not his style.]

...Won't be- [No. No more questions. He'd already explained quite a bit, and why risk disrupting his good mood? She's quiet for another short while, before her eyes focus on the clothes she's wearing - with a bit of blood still on them, and everything.]

I don't suppose you'll permit me to go far enough to purchase clean clothing.

If you insist, I can't stop you. [Eyeing you carefully.] You seem to be well enough.

I'd defer to your opinion here. [Besides, she's run into another problem] It wouldn't matter. I don't have any gald.

Everything's free here. [Small shrug.] It should be fine. Just tell me if you start feeling dizzy or nauseous.

Free? [Now that one gets her. How do the people survive?

But since Jade does seem okay with it, she carefully moves her blankets aside and stands. A moment, then two, and nothing seems out of the ordinary.]

Yes. It seemed strange to me at first, but that's the way it is. [He's watching you very closely, although he looks relaxed.] Well then, shall we be going?

[Silence. Then a quiet sigh.]

If it won't rob you of too much dignity...I would like some assistance.
